How to Swaddle a Baby

By Ron Northcutt of Real Tidings, LLC

Every new parent should quickly learn how to swaddle a baby... in the beginning, it can be a fast way to calm and sooth a fussy baby.

In utero, babies are constantly warm and closely snug. Coming out can be quite a chock, and swaddling a baby tightly can make them feel more comfortable and relaxed.

In addition, the pressure of the swaddle (or "baby burrito") can make it easier to pass gas and get the digestion going. Trust me - get the swaddle and it makes life easier!

Directions

1) Set up the blanket
Lay the blanket on a flat surface, and fold one corner. This is where the baby's head will go.

2) Fold over side 1 tight!
Pull and fold the left (or high) side over the baby and tuck it under their back. This should be tight and snug.

3) Fold up the bottom
Pull the bottom of the blanket up and tuck into the top under the chin. Keep it tight (this will all loosen quickly)

4) Fold over the last side
Take the last side (the low side) and wrap it around the rest.

Thats it! You have now swaddled a baby. You should notice that the baby is getting calmer, and when you pick them up, the "package" should be snug.

NOTE: Be sure to keep extra bits of the blanket AWAY from the baby's face. If its cold, use a hat to keep the head warm NOT the blanket.

If you continue this practice, the baby will learn to use swaddling as a coping mechanism, and when they get too old to swaddle, then putting them in a sling will mimic the results and put them to sleep.
